GUWAHATI: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore, has invited Gauhati University (GU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Pratap Jyoti Handique as a Resource Person to NAAC's Manthan programme being organized by the Raj Bhavan, Lucknow today and tomorrow.
According to a press release, the participants of the programme are the Vice-Chancellors of Indian universities and chairpersons of NAAC Peer Teams. Professor Handique will deliberate on three criteria (1, 2, and 3) of NAAC assessment and accreditation process (A/A). Only four Vice-Chancellors of 'A' grade universities, including Professor Handique from Gauhati University, have selected and invited as resource persons by NAAC. In recent times, NAAC has infused a new spirit into its processes of assessment and accreditation. This has been attempted as a continuance of the NAAC's concern for ensuring that its A/A processes are in tune with the needs and changes in the local, regional and global scenario of Higher Education. The mandate of NAAC is to make quality assurance as a vital part of the functioning of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and to motivate them to build a strong quality culture within. Inclusion of Vice-Chancellor Professor Handique as a resource person in the NAAC Manthan programme is considered as a notable honour to Gauhati University.
Varsity Week ends: According to another press release, the Gauhati University Varsity Week, which commenced on March 28, ended successfully on Sunday.
Vice Chancellor Prof Pratap Jyoti Handique had inaugurated the Varsity Week by hoisting the Gauhati University flag. This was followed by a March Past at the GU Sports Complex. All the 15 PGSU members successfully conducted their respective events during the Varsity Week.
On the last day, a colourful cultural rally was taken out which showcased different arts and cultures of Assam and the North-East. Prof Handique, Dr HK Nath, Registrar, GU, Dr RK Kakati, Director, Students' Welfare, GU, Sankor Jyoti Baruah , general secretary, AASU, Hemen Kalita, president, PGSU, GU and Biki Sarma, general secretary, PGSU, GU graced the closing ceremony as guests and gave away the prizes to the winners of various events.
The winners included, among others, Jyotirupa Sarma - Best Singer; Hridayananda Nath – 2nd Best Singer; Abinash Saikia – Best Actor; Kasturi Shivam – Best Actress; Dengkhw Brahma – Best Athlete (Boys); Urmila Borgohain – Best Athlete ( Girls); Harshajit Kalita – Best Literary; Mriganka Bania – Best Fine Arts. The programme ended with a Cultural Nite performed by noted singer Prabin Das and Achurjya Borpatra.
